Unfortunetly, many would care if they saw an inmate depart with a little smile. Your idea of ditching the paralytic seems like it would be the most accepted to me. I always assumed the peanut gallery at an execution would be happiest with a good ol fashion stoning (or perhaps a lynching would be more appropriate in Texas, where they juiced 26 people in 2007, about 10x more than any other state).
